Vehicle Description 1956 Ford Thunderbird 2-door RoadsterAttached is the original factory invoice from Walker Motor Company in Los Angeles on March 6, 1956.
The Bird spent about 30 years in Iowa before I purchased it 2-1/2 years ago.
That previous owner always stored the car during the winters and drove it only in better weather.
It was he who added the retro AC unit.
The Bird has every available option, although the tonneau cover (probably dealer-installed) has been long-lost.
Note the power windows, seats, steering, brakes and more.
Everything works except for the cigarette lighter and the tach.
Repainting in the original black color was done some years ago and looks great from thirty feet, but up close there are many minor imperfections.
The black hard top with opera windows and white headliner is in very good condition.
The black soft top is in good condition and fits very well, and has minor imperfections.
The dashboard and dash pad may be original and are in good condition, with the pleated optional applique on the right side having some wrinkles.
The seats are replacement original colors and pattern and are in good condition, but the driver's bottom cushion sags a bit.
The carpeting has been replaced in the original color and is intact and clean, but is not closely tailored.
The full wire-wheel covers are in excellent condition.
The tires are BFG Silvertown Radials P205/75R15, like new with minimal wear.
The Desert Air AC unit has a 16X3 facing underneath the dash center, and blows cold.
It is great for Iowa and Florida summers, yet is easily removed if you want to go more original.
The radio looks original, but is a newer replacement with a remote control.
Because these early Birds tended to overheat, this one has a larger-capacity radiator and an upgraded water pump.
An alternator replaces the old generator.
The exhaust system is new stainless-steel and original style.
The four-barrel carb, air cleaner, and distributor are new, as part of an extensive tune-up in February 2023.
That service also included spark plugs and wires, new front shocks, valve cover gaskets, brake adjustment, fuel filter, and a return fuel line from carb to gas tank to prevent vapor lock.
All of this service was done by Vintage Motors of Sarasota, a long-established and highly-regarded showroom/service center.
The body panels, floorpans, and chassis are intact and rust-free; there is some rust on the leaf springs, but they are fully intact and operational.
The Bird is a lively and very enjoyable driver, and gets a lot of attention.
And in case you are wondering, I do not want to sell this beauty.
I bought it for the long term, but I am a retiree whose income is not fixed but rather dependent upon equity investments, and you know how poorly those are doing.
Thus, my For Sale sign.
